INDICATION

Flow Dex 10% 500ML is a sterile hypertonic dextrose infusion indicated for the correction of hypoglycemia, provision of caloric support in fluid-restricted patients, and supplemental glucose delivery in clinical settings where a smaller infusion volume with higher caloric density is preferred over the 1000ml presentation.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Dextrose 10% is a hypertonic solution providing 340 kcal per liter. The 500ml volume delivers 170 kcal and a concentrated glucose load, making it suitable when caloric supplementation is needed without large fluid volumes. Glucose is metabolized via glycolysis and the citric acid cycle to produce ATP. The hypertonic nature of the solution stimulates insulin release and drives cellular glucose uptake, correcting hypoglycemia efficiently.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Administered intravenously under medical supervision

•      Individualize dose and rate based on blood glucose levels, clinical status, and fluid requirements

•      For acute hypoglycemia: infuse at a rate guided by blood glucose monitoring

•      Prefer central venous access for prolonged infusions to reduce peripheral phlebitis risk

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Hyperglycemia with rapid or unmonitored infusion

•      Phlebitis at infusion site with peripheral administration

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Same interactions as Flow Dex 10% 1000ML. Corticosteroids worsen hyperglycemia. Insulin requirements are elevated during infusion. Direct mixing with blood products is contraindicated.

Store at room temperature between 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. Protect from freezing and light. Do not use if solution appears cloudy or the container is damaged. Single use only.
