INDICATION

Prelox DS 200mg is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic indicated for the treatment of bacterial infections, including upper and lower respiratory tract infections (sinusitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia), urinary tract infections (UTIs), skin and soft tissue infections, otitis media, and gonorrhoea. It is effective against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Prelox DS contains Cefpodoxime Proxetil, a beta-lactam antibiotic that kills bacteria by inhibiting the synthesis of their cell wall. It binds to specific proteins on the bacterial cell surface known as penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for cross-linking the peptidoglycan layers of the cell wall. Disruption of this cross-linking weakens the cell wall, causing the bacteria to swell and rupture. Human cells, lacking a cell wall, are unaffected by this mechanism.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Adults and adolescents: 200 mg twice daily at 12-hourly intervals.

•      Take with food to enhance absorption and reduce gastrointestinal discomfort.

•      Complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve early.

•      Duration is typically 5–14 days, depending on the type and severity of infection.

SIDE EFFECTS

•      Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, or abdominal discomfort.

•      Headache or dizziness.

•      Skin rash or urticaria.

•      Rare but serious: severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), Clostridium difficile-associated colitis, or blood count changes.

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins or penicillins (cross-reactivity possible). Use with caution in patients with renal impairment, a history of gastrointestinal disease, or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Not for viral infections (e.g., flu or cold).

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Absorption of Cefpodoxime may be reduced by antacids containing aluminium or magnesium, and H2 blockers. Administer these at least 2 hours before or after. Probenecid may increase cefpodoxime blood levels. Concurrent use with nephrotoxic drugs warrants monitoring.
