INDICATION

Optitek Eye Ointment is an aminoglycoside antibiotic ophthalmic ointment indicated for the treatment of external bacterial infections of the eye caused by susceptible organisms. The ointment formulation provides sustained drug contact with the ocular surface, maintaining therapeutic concentrations for longer periods than eye drops. It is especially useful for nighttime application to ensure antibacterial coverage during sleep.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Tobramycin binds irreversibly to the 30S ribosomal subunit, causing misreading of mRNA and inhibiting protein synthesis. It demonstrates bactericidal activity against a broad range of gram-negative organisms including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and gram-positive organisms including Staphylococcus aureus. The ointment base provides prolonged drug release compared to solution formulations.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

●     Apply a small ribbon (approximately 1cm) into the lower conjunctival sac 2 to 3 times daily

●     For nighttime supplementation: apply once at bedtime alongside daytime drop therapy

●     For severe infections: apply every 3 to 4 hours initially

●     Treatment duration: 7 to 10 days

●     Wash hands before and after application

●     Vision will be temporarily blurred after application

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

●     Temporary blurred vision after application

●     Mild burning or stinging

●     Eyelid irritation

Less common:

●     Allergic conjunctivitis or eyelid dermatitis

●     Corneal toxicity with prolonged use

●     Overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

●     Known hypersensitivity to tobramycin or any aminoglycoside

●     Viral or fungal eye infections

●     Extended use beyond 10 days without review

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Avoid concurrent topical use with other aminoglycosides. Apply drops before ointment when using both formulations.

STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS

Store below 25 degrees Celsius. Protect from light. Avoid contaminating the nozzle. Use within 4 weeks of opening. Keep out of reach of children.
