INDICATION

Digas Tab Classic is an antacid and anti-flatulent used for the relief of heartburn, acid indigestion, sour stomach, and bloating. It is used in conditions associated with excess gastric acid including GERD, non-ulcer dyspepsia, and peptic ulcer disease (as adjunct therapy). Simethicone provides additional relief from gas and flatulence.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide are non-absorbable antacids that directly neutralize gastric hydrochloric acid, raising intragastric pH. Magnesium hydroxide has a faster onset and a mild laxative effect, while aluminum hydroxide has a slower onset and a constipating effect; the combination produces a balanced, sustained antacid effect. Simethicone is a defoaming agent that breaks down gas bubbles in the GI tract, facilitating expulsion and relieving bloating.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Adults: 1 to 2 tablets between meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a physician

•      Chew tablets thoroughly before swallowing for best effect

•      Maximum: 8 tablets per day

•      Do not use for more than 2 weeks without medical advice

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Constipation from aluminum component

•      Diarrhea from magnesium component

•      Chalky taste

•      Nausea

Less common:

•      Hypermagnesemia in patients with renal impairment

•      Aluminum accumulation with very long-term use in patients with kidney disease

•      Hypophosphatasemia with chronic high-dose use of aluminum-containing antacids

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

•      Renal impairment (use with caution; avoid high-dose magnesium in renal failure)

•      Known hypersensitivity to any ingredient

•      Do not use in patients on sodium-restricted diets without checking sodium content

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Antacids can significantly reduce the absorption of fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines, azithromycin, and iron supplements; separate dosing by at least 2 hours. They may reduce the absorption of itraconazole, ketoconazole, and indinavir.
