INDICATION

Castor Oil BP 120ml is a stimulant laxative indicated for the short-term treatment of constipation and for bowel evacuation before radiological procedures, colonoscopy, and abdominal surgery. It is also used topically as an emollient for dry skin conditions, scalp and hair care, and as a base in various pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations. When taken orally, it acts as a potent laxative with rapid onset of action.

Medicinal Uses

·        Constipation Relief The only FDA-recognized medical use. It stimulates intestinal movement and softens stool. Effective but can cause cramping and diarrhea, so short-term use only.

·        Skin Moisturizer Rich in fatty acids, it hydrates skin without additives. Works on both face and body.

·        Anti-inflammatory and Antimicrobial Preclinical studies show it has antioxidant, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties due to ricinoleic acid's unique chemical structure.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Topical use: apply a small amount to the skin or scalp as needed

•      Do not use oral castor oil for more than 7 days; always follow the dosage prescribed by your doctor

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Nausea and vomiting (from the taste and its GI effects)

•      Abdominal cramps and griping pain

•      Diarrhoea (expected laxative effect; may be severe)

•      Dehydration with repeated use

Less common:

•      Electrolyte imbalance (hypokalaemia) with excessive or prolonged use

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Prolonged oral use of castor oil as a laxative may reduce the absorption of fat-soluble drugs and vitamins. Concurrent anticoagulant therapy may be affected by vitamin K malabsorption with prolonged use; monitor INR. Castor oil should not be combined with other laxatives without medical advice. Avoid combining with nephrotoxic drugs as dehydration from excessive laxative use may impair renal function.
