INDICATION

Laxoberon Drops are a stimulant laxative indicated for the short-term relief of occasional constipation in adults and children aged 4 years and above. It is also used for bowel preparation before diagnostic procedures and surgery.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Sodium picosulphate is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed by colonic bacterial arylsulfatases to its active metabolite, bis-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-pyridyl-2-methane (BHPM). BHPM stimulates the myenteric plexus in the colonic wall, increasing peristaltic contractions. It also reduces water and electrolyte absorption from the colon, softening the stool and increasing its bulk. Onset of action is typically 6 to 12 hours after oral administration.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

●     Adults: 5 to 10 drops (10 to 20 drops for severe constipation) at bedtime

●     Children 4 to 10 years: 2 to 5 drops at bedtime

●     May be mixed with water or juice

●     Use the lowest effective dose

●     Not for daily long-term use; consult a physician if constipation persists beyond 7 days

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

●     Abdominal cramps or mild colic

●     Diarrhea with excessive dosing

Less common:

●     Electrolyte imbalances with prolonged or excessive use

●     Dehydration if fluid intake is inadequate

●     Dependency with chronic misuse

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

●     Intestinal obstruction or ileus

●     Severe dehydration

●     Acute inflammatory bowel conditions

●     Known hypersensitivity to sodium picosulphate

●     Children below 4 years without physician guidance

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Antibiotics may reduce the efficacy of sodium picosulphate by disrupting the colonic bacteria required for its activation. Concurrent diuretics may increase the risk of electrolyte depletion. Concurrent use with other laxatives may cause excessive fluid loss.
