PURPOSE

First Answer Pregnancy Strip is a rapid diagnostic device for the early detection of pregnancy. It detects the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in urine, a hormone produced by the placenta shortly after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus.

HOW IT WORKS

First Answer Pregnancy Strip uses a lateral flow immunochromatographic assay. When urine is applied, it travels along the strip membrane. The strip contains monoclonal anti-hCG antibodies conjugated to a colloidal gold or dye. If hCG is present at or above the detection threshold (typically 20 to 25 mIU/mL), a visible test line forms by antigen-antibody complex binding at the test zone. A control line always appears to confirm the test is valid. The result is read within 3 to 5 minutes.

HOW TO USEE

•      Collect a urine sample, preferably first morning urine which has the highest hCG concentration

•      Dip the strip into the urine sample up to the marked MAX line for 3 to 5 seconds

•      Place the strip flat on a clean dry surface

•      Read the result after 3 to 5 minutes and no later than 10 minutes

•      Two lines indicate a positive result (pregnant); one line indicates a negative result

•      A faint second line still indicates a positive result regardless of color intensity

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      No pharmacological side effects as this is a non-medicated diagnostic strip

Less common:

•      False negative results may occur if test is performed too early, with dilute urine, or before hCG levels reach the detection threshold

•      False positive results are rare but may occur in cases of ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy, or certain hormonal conditions
